- Open to ages 18 to 40 who do not pay income tax.

- Contributions are deducted automatically from your bank account.

## So what exactly do you get after 60?

You choose a fixed monthly pension of Rs 1,000, Rs 2,000, Rs 3,000, Rs 4,000 or Rs 5,000.

The pension starts when you reach 60 years of age. The amount you pay each month depends on the pension you choose and the age you join.

If the subscriber dies, the spouse gets the pension. When both have died, the nominee gets the accumulated savings.

If you leave before 60, you get your contributions with the income earned, after small charges. Amounts can change, so please confirm the current rules on jansuraksha.gov.in.

## Who can apply, and who cannot?

You must be between 18 and 40 years old to join.

You must have a savings bank account, and your Aadhaar must be linked to it.

You cannot join if you are an income taxpayer, or if you have been one in the past. This rule applies from October 1, 2022.

Employees who already have a company pension or provident fund can still apply, as the scheme is open to all citizens who meet the age and tax rules.

You need to keep contributing for about 20 years, until you reach age 60.

## Why was this scheme started, and what changed?

The scheme was launched on May 9, 2015, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Kolkata.

It replaced the older Swavalamban Yojana, which was started by the earlier government.

It is named after former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

It is run by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority, PFRDA, under the Ministry of Finance.

By April 2026, total enrolments crossed 9 crore subscribers.
