Bomb threats forced several TV stations across Europe to evacuate or pause programmes on Friday.

CNBCTV18 reported that no bombs were found at any affected site.

The threats were sent to Irish broadcaster RTÉ, Britain's Sky and Bulgaria's Nova TV, among others. The companies said so.

### Key points

- Bomb threats reached TV channels in Ireland, Britain and Bulgaria on Friday.
- No bombs were found at any affected site.
- Hoax bomb threats also disrupted flights in several countries this week.
- Officials have not confirmed who sent the threats or why.

## What happened at the TV stations on Friday?

RTÉ replaced its programmes with music and a pre-recorded message. In some cases this lasted up to three hours.

Staff returned after police finished a sweep of the buildings. In Sofia, police checked the Nova newsroom and found it safe.

Broadcasting was not interrupted.

Sky confirmed it received a threat. A spokesperson said Sky was "one of a number of media organisations" targeted.

## Why are flights also part of this story?

Hoax bomb threats disrupted passenger flights from Serbia to Finland and Spain in recent days.

Some planes were diverted or landed in emergencies. No explosives have been found.

France said four new threats were made against planes over its territory on Friday. The planes landed safely.

NATO also ordered an air patrol near the Hungary-Romania border.

The European Commission activated an information sharing system among EU countries.

It said it is still too early to know whether the incidents are related.

## Who sent the threats, and are they linked?

The emails to RTÉ and Nova were signed Mikhail Andropov.

The sender claimed to lead the group behind this week's plane hoaxes. The message warned that "this is only the beginning."

The name shares a surname with Yuri Andropov, a former General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.

It is unclear whether this points to Russian involvement or is meant to blame Moscow.

Views differ on whether the threats are connected.

Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin said security agencies had not yet decided if they were made by individuals or as a coordinated attack.

The Irish government, however, described them as likely coordinated.

The BBC reported that no concrete link has been established between the airline messages and the broadcasters.

Investigations are continuing.
