Most people on the south Andhra Pradesh coast were asleep when Cyclone Murasu arrived. Around 1 am on Tuesday, 3 November, the storm began crossing the coast near Ongole in Prakasam district. For the next few hours, wind and rain pounded villages, fishing hamlets and farmland from Nellore to Bapatla.

### Quick read

- Cyclone Murasu made landfall near Ongole, Andhra Pradesh, around 1 am on 3 November.
- Winds reached 100 to 110 km/h with gusts up to 120 km/h, per the IMD.
- No deaths were reported in the first hours. About 2,000 people were evacuated, with plans to move 30,000.
- Heavy rain is expected in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Odisha until Wednesday.

By morning, the picture was a familiar one for this coast: trees across roads, power poles snapped, thatched houses flattened and fields under water. Early on, there was one piece of good news. The state's disaster management authority said no deaths or injuries had been reported in the first hours after landfall.

## What happened overnight

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the storm came ashore near Ongole at about 1 am. It crossed the coast between Nellore and Narsapur over the next few hours, with sustained winds of 100 to 110 km/h and gusts of up to 120 km/h. Some local reports put gusts higher, but the IMD figures are the official ones.

This is the second storm to hit Andhra Pradesh in less than a week, which made the night harder. The ground was already wet, rivers and drains were already full, and families who had only just cleaned up were hit again.

## The damage so far

### Trees, power lines and homes

The worst damage reported so far is in Prakasam and Bapatla districts. Thousands of trees were uprooted, and hundreds of electricity poles came down, leaving large areas without power. In Ongole, several thatched houses collapsed, and some residents were stranded until rescue teams reached them.

### Farmers and fishermen

For farmers, the timing is cruel. Standing crops in Bapatla and Prakasam have been badly hit, according to PTI reports carried by The Tribune. Fishing boats along the coast were also wrecked. For many families here, a boat is the only way to earn, and repairing or replacing one can take months.

## How people were kept safe

The state moved early. About 2,000 people were evacuated from low-lying and coastal areas before landfall, and the administration planned to move around 30,000 people to safer places as the storm moved inland. Relief camps were opened in the most exposed villages.

Schools and colleges in several coastal districts were shut on 3 November. Schools in Cuddalore, in neighbouring Tamil Nadu, also closed because of heavy rain linked to the storm.

### Travel disruption

At least 19 domestic flights were cancelled at Vijayawada, Tirupati and Visakhapatnam airports. Several trains were also affected. If you are travelling in coastal Andhra this week, check your flight or train status before you leave home.

## What happens next

The IMD expected Murasu to weaken into a cyclonic storm by Tuesday noon and into a deep depression by midnight. Weakening does not mean the danger is over. Heavy rain is still expected in parts of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Odisha until Wednesday, and flooding often gets worse after the wind dies down, as water drains from the hills to the plains.

### If you live in an affected area

- Stay away from fallen power lines and do not touch electric poles, even if the power seems to be off.
- Do not walk or drive through flowing water. Even knee-deep water can sweep a person off their feet.
- Drink boiled or purified water for the next few days, as floods can contaminate wells and pipes.
- Follow updates from the IMD and the district administration, not forwarded messages.

## Why this coast keeps getting hit

The Bay of Bengal produces more cyclones than the Arabian Sea, and October to December is its busiest season. Warm sea water feeds these storms. Andhra Pradesh's long, low-lying coastline puts millions of people in their path, which is why the state has spent years building cyclone shelters and warning systems.

Those systems are the reason a storm like Murasu can now pass without the huge loss of life seen in cyclones of the 1970s and 1990s. But the cost to homes, crops and boats is still heavy. The real test will be how quickly power is restored and how fairly compensation reaches farmers and fishing families in the weeks ahead.

News Anek will update this story as official figures on damage and relief come in.
