India and the European Union have concluded negotiations on India's association with Horizon Europe.

This is the bloc's flagship research and innovation programme, worth 93.5 billion euros.

The talks were completed ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's expected visit to Brussels in mid-December.

That visit is planned for the formal signing of the India-EU free trade agreement.

The New Indian Express reported this from New Delhi.

The European Commission called the conclusion an important step in India-EU relations.

- Once signed, Indian researchers can receive direct EU funding.
- Modi is expected in Brussels in mid-December for the trade deal.

## So what is Horizon Europe?

Horizon Europe is the European Union's main programme for research and innovation.

It supports projects that bring scientists and companies together.

The largest part of the programme is called Pillar II.

It focuses on global challenges such as healthcare, digital technology, climate change, energy, space and the bioeconomy.

Association means organisations from outside the EU can take part on equal terms with EU partners.

In return, they make financial contributions to the programme.

## What does this mean for Indian researchers?

Once the agreement is signed, Indian researchers and organisations can get funding directly from Horizon Europe.

They can also lead joint research projects.

The talks began with exploratory discussions in February.

Formal negotiations followed in July, and the latest step builds on a science agreement signed in 2001.

That 2001 agreement has been renewed until 2030.
