ISRO, the Indian Space Research Organisation, posted on X about its next navigation satellite.

The post announced NVS-03, the third satellite in the second-generation NVS series.

The agency said the satellite is meant to strengthen NavIC, India's own navigation system.

In its post, ISRO said the satellite is "intended to augment the NavIC constellation and support continuity of navigation services."

### Key points

- The GSLV-F18 rocket launched NVS-03 late on October 30.
- The launch took place from Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.
- The satellite is designed to add new signals to NavIC.
- It must still raise its orbit before testing begins.

## What is NavIC, and why does it matter?

NavIC is India's regional navigation system. It provides positioning and timing services across the country.

It also reaches up to 1,500 km beyond India's borders.

Narayanan, quoted by Financial Express, called NavIC a strategic national asset.

He said it also supports civilian uses, such as real-time tracking of trains.

## What will NVS-03 add to the system?

The satellite carries an indigenous atomic clock, along with some procured clocks.

It will also introduce the L1 navigation signal, in addition to the existing L5 and S-band signals.

This is expected to improve NavIC's capabilities and its compatibility with navigation receivers.

A Financial Express report asks how the launch could improve navigation on smartphones.

## Why did the launch take extra care?

The earlier satellite, NVS-02, was placed in an initial transfer orbit in January 2025.

A propulsion problem stopped it from reaching its intended orbit.

For NVS-03, ISRO has changed how the satellite's propulsion valves are activated. The aim is to avoid a repeat of that problem. After separation, the satellite must complete its orbit-raising manoeuvres before testing and commissioning. News Anek has not independently verified the satellite's performance.
