For years, people asked one question about Reliance Jio: when will it list on the stock market? Now we know, and the debut beat almost every expectation. Jio Platforms raised about ₹30,200 crore in India's biggest-ever initial public offering (IPO). When its shares started trading on 28 October 2026, they jumped more than 21 per cent on day one.

### Quick read

- Jio Platforms raised about ₹30,213 crore, India's biggest IPO ever.
- The issue was subscribed 22.19 times.
- Shares listed at ₹1,358 on 28 October, 21.36% above the ₹1,119 issue price.
- It became India's second most valuable listed company, after parent Reliance Industries.

Here is what happened, why it matters even if you have never bought a share, and what to keep in mind if you are thinking of investing now.

## The record IPO in numbers

- **Size:** about ₹30,213 crore, all of it a fresh issue of new shares. That beat Hyundai Motor India's ₹27,800 crore IPO from 2024 as the largest in India's history.
- **Price:** the price band was ₹1,065 to ₹1,119 per share, and shares were issued at ₹1,119.
- **Demand:** the issue was subscribed 22.19 times overall. Big institutional investors bid for more than 70 times the shares set aside for them. Retail investors subscribed about 2.7 times.
- **Listing:** on 28 October, the shares opened at ₹1,358, a premium of 21.36 per cent over the issue price.
- **Value:** at listing, the company was worth roughly ₹12.5 lakh crore.

## India's second most valuable company

With that valuation, Jio Platforms became India's second most valuable listed company on its very first day. Only one company was bigger: its own parent, Reliance Industries. Few companies anywhere in the world have entered a stock market that high up the table.

### Breaking a bad habit

Business Standard pointed out something interesting: for more than a decade, India's biggest record-setting IPOs had tended to list at a discount, leaving early investors with a loss on day one. Jio broke that pattern. That gives a boost of confidence to India's stock market at a time of global uncertainty.

## What exactly is Jio Platforms?

Most people know Jio as the mobile network that made data cheap in India after 2016\. Jio Platforms is the bigger company that owns that telecom business along with Reliance's digital ventures, such as JioFiber broadband, apps, cloud services and newer businesses in areas like artificial intelligence.

Before the IPO, it had already raised money from global giants. In 2020, companies including Facebook (now Meta) and Google, along with several investment funds, bought stakes in Jio Platforms. The IPO now lets ordinary investors own a piece too.

## Why this matters even if you don't invest

### Your phone bill

Jio is India's largest mobile operator. A listed company is under constant pressure to grow profits, and in telecom, the most direct way to do that is to raise average revenue per user, in simple words, tariffs. Mobile plans have already become costlier in recent years, and analysts widely expect more increases across the industry over time.

### India's markets

A huge, successful listing shows that Indian markets can absorb giant deals. That could encourage other large companies to list in India rather than abroad.

## Thinking of buying now? Read this first

A strong first day does not guarantee future gains. Shares that jump on listing often swing sharply in the following weeks as early investors book profits. Before you buy:

- Look at the company's earnings and debt, not just the hype.
- Avoid putting a large part of your savings into a single stock.
- Be careful of social media "tips" promising quick doubling of money.

Jio changed how India uses the internet. Now it has changed India's IPO record books too. The next chapter, as a listed company answering to millions of shareholders, will be just as closely watched.

## Quick questions, quick answers

### Which IPO did Jio beat for the record?

Hyundai Motor India's ₹27,800 crore IPO from 2024.

### Will mobile tariffs go up?

Nothing has been announced because of the listing, but analysts widely expect telecom tariffs across the industry to rise over time.
