The Kerala government is examining the legal aspects of bringing a special law to stop insults and attacks against women on social media. Chief Minister V D Satheesan said this on Monday in Thiruvananthapuram, according to news agency Press Trust of India (PTI), as reported by India Today.

### Key points

- The state is studying the legal side of a special Act to punish social media attacks on women.
- The Chief Minister said existing laws offer little protection after a Supreme Court verdict.
- A women's policy is being prepared through consultations with stakeholders.
- A project to make every Kudumbashree member financially independent will be launched soon.

## What the Chief Minister said

Satheesan was inaugurating "Makalkoppam", a two-day seminar organised by the Women and Child Development Department. He said the government was thinking of sending people who attack women on social media to prison through a special Act.

According to him, existing laws provide little protection against such attacks following a Supreme Court verdict. He said the government wanted to make sure that no woman is attacked or insulted on social media.

## Focus on ordinary women

The Chief Minister said the proposed law is meant mainly for ordinary women, who he described as the main targets of online abuse. He pointed out that chief ministers, ministers, MLAs and other political leaders know how to defend themselves against online attacks.

"But what can an ordinary woman, who does not know how to defend herself against such attacks, do? It is for them that we are planning this special Act," he said, as reported by PTI.

## Women's policy and financial independence

The seminar was organised to help shape a women's policy after talks with various stakeholders. Satheesan said the Makalkoppam initiative could lead to a policy that becomes a model for the country.

He said governments usually frame a policy and ask others to follow it, but in this case the government is seeking suggestions and opinions from all stakeholders. "The policy will be formulated by you," he said, and he assured that the government would implement it with strong commitment.

The Chief Minister also said the government is working to ensure women's financial independence and has several projects in the pipeline. A major project aimed at making every Kudumbashree member financially independent will be launched soon. He said it would not be one design for the whole state. "Each area will have projects exclusively designed for that region," he said.

## What happens next

For now, the special law is only under examination, and the report does not give details of its provisions or a timeline. The government is considering the law while it also consults stakeholders on the women's policy and prepares region-specific projects to support women's financial independence.
