The North Eastern Council (NEC) released Rs 79.53 crore for projects across the Northeast.

Meghalaya received the largest share, Rs 26.56 crore, among the eight northeastern states.

The money is part of two NEC schemes.

These are the Schemes of NEC (SoNEC) and the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS-Roads).

Most of Meghalaya's share will go to rural roads. So why does this matter for ordinary people?

### Key points

- The NEC released Rs 79.53 crore for Northeast projects in October 2026.
- Meghalaya received Rs 26.56 crore, the highest share among the eight states.
- A 46.08 km road will improve access for 78 villages.
- The Chief Minister also launched three roads in Mawhati worth Rs 9.60 crore.

## How will this change life in Meghalaya's villages?

A major project is the rehabilitation and strengthening of the 46.08 km Chokpot-Kharukol road.

It is expected to improve connectivity for 78 villages.

More than 15,000 residents are expected to benefit. Better roads can make it easier to reach schools, clinics and markets.

The NEC has also supported a new multi-disciplinary training-cum-resource centre in Shillong.

## How does Meghalaya's share compare with other states?

Sikkim received Rs 15.51 crore and Assam received Rs 14.79 crore. Arunachal Pradesh got Rs 11.18 crore.

Nagaland received Rs 7.99 crore and Tripura received Rs 3.50 crore.

Manipur and Mizoram also received funds for infrastructure and other development work.

## What did the Chief Minister announce in Mawhati?

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma visited Mawhati in Ri-Bhoi district on November 8, 2026.

He is the first state chief minister to visit the remote area in more than five decades.

He inaugurated three roads under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY-III).

Together they have been sanctioned at Rs 9.60 crore.

He also asked for a regular medical officer at Mawhati Primary Health Centre, which serves 42 villages.

He distributed Rs 2 crore among 120 self-help groups.

The report did not give timelines for the roads or a date for the doctor's posting. So what happens next?

The next steps include taking forward the three road projects and filling the medical officer post.

The state will also implement the support for self-help groups.

Explainer

### What happened before

- A state chief minister had not visited the remote Mawhati area of Ri-Bhoi district in more than five decades until this visit.
- The NEC reviewed completed and ongoing projects in other Northeastern states in October 2026.

### Why it matters

Rural roads and health services decide how easily people reach schools, markets and government offices. The new funds and road projects aim to improve that access.

### What to watch next

- The three sanctioned road projects under PMGSY-III will be taken forward, though the timelines were not given.
- The state will address the need for a regular medical officer at Mawhati Primary Health Centre.
