The National Federation of Indian Railwaymen (NFIR) has asked the 8th Central Pay Commission to fix minimum basic pay at Rs 69,000 per employee and to adopt a fitment factor of 3.833\. A delegation of the federation presented these demands to the commission in New Delhi on Friday, according to an NFIR statement.

### Key points

- NFIR wants minimum basic pay of Rs 69,000 and a fitment factor of 3.833.
- It has sought a rise in the annual increment from 3 per cent to 6 per cent, with a minimum benefit of Rs 10,000.
- The federation wants at least five promotions for each employee during service.
- It also wants DA merged with basic pay when it reaches 25 per cent.

## Who presented the demands

The delegation was led by NFIR president Guman Singh and general secretary M. Raghavaiah. As per the statement, the federation said the proposed fitment factor was meant to ensure an adequate revision of pay for railway employees.

## Increment, promotions and DA

One of the main demands is a higher annual increment. NFIR has asked that the present rate of 3 per cent be doubled to 6 per cent. It has also asked that the increment should not give less than Rs 10,000 in financial benefit.

On career growth, the federation has called for a minimum of five promotions for employees over their service period.

NFIR has also proposed that dearness allowance (DA) be merged with basic pay whenever it reaches 25 per cent.

## Separate pay structure sought

The federation has asked for open-ended pay scales. It has also sought a distinct pay structure for railway staff, one that recognises the arduous and hazardous nature of railway duties.

These demands are part of NFIR's wider representation to the 8th Central Pay Commission on pay revision and service-related benefits for railway employees. The source does not say when the commission will respond or decide on these proposals.

## Why it matters to railway staff

For railway employees, the fitment factor, minimum pay, increment rate and promotion chances all affect salary and career progress. The demands now form part of the proposals before the commission, which will examine pay revision for central government staff.
