Pixxel is a space-tech startup based in Bengaluru.

Its founder and CEO, Awais Ahmed, has defended the company's Indian ownership and control.

The debate started after Pixxel announced a US subsidiary called Pixxel Federal on October 29.

The unit will chase contracts with US civilian, defence and intelligence agencies.

Pixxel Federal will offer Earth observation technology, satellite mission systems and geospatial intelligence services.

The customers will be American government bodies.

Some people criticised the company's international structure.

Ahmed responded in a detailed statement posted on X on November 2\. BW Disrupt reported this.

### Key points

- Pixxel created a US subsidiary, Pixxel Federal, to serve American government agencies.
- Ahmed says the company is headquartered, owned and controlled in India.
- Indian investors, including the founders, hold the largest share.
- Pixxel plans to go public in India in the coming years.

## Why did this debate start in the first place?

Another Bengaluru space-tech startup, GalaxEye, joined the discussion.

On November 1, it said it stays headquartered in India.

GalaxEye said it works through a single corporate entity.

All its contracts and bids were submitted through that company, which it says keeps things simple.

Ahmed replied a day later. He said Pixxel wants to build a global space business rooted in Indian engineering.

## Who owns Pixxel, according to its founder?

Ahmed says the company's main Indian entity was set up in 2018\. He says it came before its international entities.

He also says the Indian entity is not a subsidiary of any US company.

Pixxel Federal will operate independently, with its own board and CEO.

On shareholding, Ahmed says Indian investors hold the largest share.

Investors from Singapore, the UK and the US come after them.

He says no international investor has unilateral control, beyond usual investor protections.

## What happens next for Pixxel and its technology?

Ahmed also addressed concerns about intellectual property and national security.

He says technology built for Indian government projects stays under Indian ownership and control.

Those programmes run through Indian entities and follow Indian laws.

The company also plans to set up subsidiaries in other countries as it expands.

Pixxel develops hyperspectral imaging satellites.

These capture data across many narrow wavelength bands, which normal satellite images may miss.

The company was founded by Ahmed and Kshitij Khandelwal.

Pixxel has also worked with NASA and the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO).

It raised 100 million US dollars in a Series C round co-led by Temasek and Seraphim.

Its total funding is about 195 million US dollars.

In India, a Pixxel-led group is building a constellation of 12 Earth observation satellites.

It is a public-private initiative with IN-SPACe.
