### Key points

- The scheme helps farmers install solar pumps for irrigation.
- Subsidy is generally 60% from the government, and states may add more.
- Some states select farmers through an online lottery.
- Surplus solar electricity can be sold, adding to farm income.

## So what exactly does a farmer get?

PM-KUSUM gives a subsidy on the cost of a solar irrigation pump. Generally the government covers about 60% of the cost.

Some states offer a higher subsidy. In Uttar Pradesh, the government has proposed up to 90% for small and marginal farmers.

Farmers can also get a loan from a bank for their share. The scheme has provision for an interest rebate on such loans.

Farmers can sell extra solar electricity back to the grid. This can add to their yearly income.

Subsidy amounts depend on pump size and state rules, and they can change. Please confirm the current figure on the official site.

## Who can apply, and who cannot?

The scheme is for farmers who need water for irrigation. Individual farmers, groups of farmers, panchayats and cooperatives can apply.

Your land must be in your name, or you must have the right to use it for farming. Land records may be asked for.

Each state has its own rules on priority, land size and selection. Small and marginal farmers often get priority.

Some states select farmers by lottery, so not everyone who applies gets a pump in the same year.

## Why was this scheme started, and what is new?

PM-KUSUM was launched in March 2019 by the Government of India. Its aim is to reduce diesel dependence and provide energy security to farmers.

It is run by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, with state agriculture departments carrying out implementation.

In Uttar Pradesh, about 40,521 subsidised solar pumps were planned for 2025-2026\. Recently the state also proposed a higher subsidy for small farmers. Check the latest status on your state portal.

## What documents should you keep ready?

Keep your Aadhaar card and a mobile number linked with it.

Keep your land papers, such as khatauni or the record of rights.

Keep your bank account details, and a bank passbook or cheque for payment.

Some states may ask for a passport-size photo and a caste certificate for category-based priority.
