### Key points

- Rs 5,000 is paid in three instalments for the first live child.
- The woman must be 19 years or older.
- Women who get paid maternity leave from their job may not get it.
- Pregnancy must be registered at the Anganwadi centre to start.

## So what exactly does a mother get?

The scheme gives Rs 5,000 as a cash incentive for the first living child.

The money is paid in three instalments. The first comes at pregnancy registration, the second after the child-birth related visits, and the third after the child is born and vaccinated.

Under the National Food Security Act, the benefit was set at Rs 6,000\. Amounts can change, so please confirm the current figure on the official site.

The money goes directly to the bank account of the woman. No middleman is involved.

## Who can apply, and who cannot?

The basic rule is that the woman must be pregnant or lactating, and at least 19 years old.

The benefit is for the first live birth in the family.

Women who are getting paid maternity leave from their employer are not eligible for this cash benefit.

Women who have already received the full benefit for a child cannot apply again for that child.
