### Key points

- Subsidy is 60 per cent of cost up to 2 kW, and 40 per cent of the extra cost from 2 to 3 kW.
- Maximum subsidy for a 3 kW system is Rs 78,000.
- You must have a valid electricity connection and roof space for panels.
- You cannot take this subsidy if you already got another solar subsidy from the government.

## So what exactly does a household get?

The main benefit is a government subsidy to lower the cost of installing rooftop solar panels.

For a system up to 2 kW, the subsidy is 60 per cent of the system cost. For the extra capacity from 2 to 3 kW, it is 40 per cent of the additional cost.

A household installing a 3 kW system can get a subsidy of up to Rs 78,000.

The scheme aims to give up to 300 units of free electricity every month. Actual savings depend on your system size and how much power you use.

If your panels make more power than you use, the extra can be sent to the grid under net metering. Some households earn from this.

Loans at around 7 per cent interest, without collateral, are available for systems up to 3 kW. Subsidy amounts can change, so confirm the current figures on the official site.

## So who can apply, and who cannot?

You must be a citizen of India. The house must be legally yours, with enough roof space for solar panels.

You need a valid electricity connection in your name. This scheme is for residential consumers.

You must not have availed any other solar panel subsidy from the government earlier.

The local electricity distribution company checks whether your roof and grid can support a solar system. Only after that is the application approved.

## What is the scheme, and why did it start?

The Government of India launched this scheme in February 2024, with an investment of over Rs 75,000 crore.

The goal is to put rooftop solar on about 1 crore homes, and to reduce electricity bills.

It is run by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, through a national online portal.

Panchayats and urban local bodies are encouraged to promote rooftop solar in their areas. By recent reports, over 26 lakh systems were installed by March 2026.

## What papers should you keep ready?

Keep your Aadhaar card ready. It is needed for identity checks.

Keep proof of residence, such as a voter ID, passport, driving licence or utility bill.

Keep your latest electricity bill, which shows your consumer number.

Keep your bank passbook or a cancelled cheque for the subsidy transfer.

Keep a mobile number and email ID linked to your electricity connection.
