## So what exactly does a student get?

Students can get an education loan to cover tuition fees and course-related expenses.

The loan needs no collateral and no third-party guarantor. Parents or guardians are listed as joint borrowers.

The central government gives a credit guarantee of 75% on loans up to Rs 7.5 lakh, which helps banks offer these loans.

Families with annual income up to Rs 4.5 lakh may get 100% interest subvention for technical and professional courses. Families earning between Rs 4.5 lakh and Rs 8 lakh may get 3% interest subvention on loans up to Rs 10 lakh.

Interest subvention amounts can change, so please confirm the current figures on the official site.

## Who can apply, and who cannot?

The basic rule is simple. The student must be admitted on merit to an eligible Quality Higher Education Institution.

Eligible institutes include central government institutes, and government and private institutes ranked in the top 100 NIRF rankings. State government institutes ranked 101 to 200 are also covered.

The interest subvention is for families with annual income up to Rs 8 lakh. The student must not be getting any other scholarship or interest subvention on an education loan.

Only up to one lakh fresh students each year can get the 3% interest subvention, so it is not guaranteed.

The list of eligible institutes is refreshed every year, so check the portal before you apply.

## Why was this scheme started, and what has changed?

The scheme was launched on 6 November 2024\. Its aim is to make sure money does not stop meritorious students from higher education.

The Department of Higher Education under the Ministry of Education runs it, with participating banks providing the loans.
