Complaints of ragging and mental harassment have been reported at 12 medical colleges in Rajasthan, according to The New Indian Express. The United Doctors' Front (UDF) has asked the state government to step in, and the Directorate of Medical Education (DME) has told institutions to enforce anti-ragging rules. The most recent action came at Dr Sampurnanand Medical College in Jodhpur, where 19 students were suspended.

### Key points

- UDF says ragging complaints have come from 12 medical colleges across Rajasthan.
- Jodhpur's Dr Sampurnanand Medical College suspended 19 students after an inquiry.
- Barmer Medical College took action against 80 senior MBBS students.
- Medical colleges have been told to keep anti-ragging committees and squads active.

## Suspensions in Jodhpur

The college administration and its anti-ragging committee held an inquiry before suspending the students. Five of them, including a postgraduate resident doctor, were suspended for three months. The other 14 were suspended for one month.

During the suspension, the students cannot take part in clinical postings or academic activities. They are also barred from the hostel, library and reading rooms, according to information provided by the college.

The inquiry began after first-year MBBS students complained to the National Medical Commission (NMC) and the anti-ragging helpline. The junior students alleged that their seniors behaved indecently and pressured them to address them as "boss".

## What UDF has alleged

UDF chairperson Dr Lakshya Mittal wrote to Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, the Director General of Police and the DME. He asked for an impartial investigation and immediate action.

The organisation said complaints from colleges across the state included several allegations. Junior students were allegedly called to hostels or other places late at night and verbally abused. Some were allegedly forced to cut their hair, and some had their mobile phones taken away. Others were allegedly threatened with damage to their careers if they complained.

UDF named institutions in Kota, Jodhpur, Bhilwara, Chittorgarh, Bikaner, Jaipur, Dausa, Sawai Madhopur, Pali and Barmer. Its list comes to 11 colleges when the two Jaipur institutions, ESIC and Mahatma Gandhi Medical College, are counted separately, though the organisation put the total at 12.

Dr Mittal said: "If an investigation confirms institutional negligence or a failure to respond promptly to complaints, the concerned deans, principals, wardens and other officials should be held accountable."

## Other action and official directions

Barmer Medical College recently took disciplinary action against 80 senior MBBS students, including 15 women, after complaints involving first-year students. Thirteen were expelled from the hostel. Others were suspended from academic activities and banned for a year from cultural and sporting events.

The State Medical Education Commissionerate has directed all government and private medical colleges to keep their anti-ragging committees and squads active. It also asked them to act promptly on complaints, monitor regularly and follow a zero-tolerance approach to ragging.

The complaints have renewed questions about how institutions monitor student conduct and protect junior students from harassment. UDF has asked for accountability if officials are found to have been negligent. The source does not say whether the government has responded to the letter.
