A three-judge bench approved a settlement formula.

The bench included Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana.

The formula came after consultations that Attorney General R. Venkataramani helped arrange.

Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana all took part.

India Legal reported this.

Under the deal, Himachal Pradesh will receive 11,973 million units of electricity from Punjab and Haryana.

That will happen over 20 years.

### Key points

- Himachal Pradesh will get 11,973 million units over 20 years.
- The settlement adjusts the share by ₹420 crore for dam construction costs.
- No money moves between states. The adjustment works through electricity allocation.
- The dispute had remained unresolved for several decades.

## Why is the final amount lower than the first estimate?

The Central Electricity Authority first assessed Himachal's entitlement at 13,066 million units.

The final settlement made an adjustment of ₹420 crore.

This adjustment is linked to the money spent on building the dams in the past.

The settlement avoids inter-State money transfers.

## Why did the states disagree on the time period?

The time period was a major point of disagreement. Himachal Pradesh wanted the full share delivered within 10 years.

Punjab asked for 30 years.

The Attorney General suggested 15 years. After weighing all the positions, the court chose a 20-year schedule.

## So what does this mean for people in the region?

The ruling creates a framework to carry out the Supreme Court's 2011 decree.

The decision brings closure to a dispute that had stayed open for decades.

For ordinary readers, electricity sharing among these three states will now follow this fixed plan.
