### Key points

- This scheme is only for residents of Uttar Pradesh.
- The central government's Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme sets the base rules.
- Applicants must be poor and meet the age limit set by the scheme.
- Keep Aadhaar and bank details ready, and check the portal for the current amount.

## So what does an eligible senior citizen get?

Eligible senior citizens get a monthly pension from the state.

Under the central scheme, the pension for those aged 60 to 79 is Rs 200 a month from the Centre, and Rs 500 a month for those aged 80 and above.

The state government adds its own share on top. States are urged to add at least as much as the central share.

Amounts can change, so readers should confirm the current figure on the official site, sspy-up.gov.in.

## Who can apply, and who cannot?

The basic rule is age and poverty. The applicant must be 60 years or above.

The applicant must also live below the poverty line, and must be a resident of Uttar Pradesh.

People who already get a similar pension from another government scheme are generally not eligible for a second one.

The exact income and category rules are set by the state, so check the latest guidelines on the portal before applying.

## Where does this scheme come from?

The Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme began in 1995 under the National Social Assistance Programme.

It was later extended to all poor persons, and the age limit was lowered to 60 years in 2011.

The Ministry of Rural Development runs the central scheme. Uttar Pradesh runs its own state pension scheme alongside it.

## What documents should you keep ready?

Keep the applicant's Aadhaar card ready, with the linked mobile number.

Keep a bank passbook or account details, linked with Aadhaar.

Keep proof of age, such as a birth certificate, school certificate or voter card.

Keep a income or poverty certificate, and a residence proof for Uttar Pradesh.
