With the Section 87A rebate, there is no tax if taxable income is up to ₹12 lakh. Salaried people also get a ₹75,000 standard deduction, so salary up to ₹12.75 lakh is tax-free. Budget 2026 left these slabs unchanged.
Old regime slabs
Up to ₹2.5 lakh nil (₹3 lakh for 60–79, ₹5 lakh for 80+), ₹2.5–5 lakh 5%, ₹5–10 lakh 20%, above ₹10 lakh 30%. The old regime allows deductions such as 80C, 80D, HRA and home-loan interest, with a ₹50,000 standard deduction.
Which is better?
If your total deductions are small, the new regime usually costs less. The old regime can win if you claim large HRA, home-loan interest and full 80C/80D deductions. Enter your numbers above to compare.
