The Haryana government has approved two flyovers and one underpass in Gurugram at a combined cost of ₹136.41 crore, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) said on Monday. The projects aim to reduce traffic congestion at key intersections in the city, according to a report by Hindustan Times.

Key points

  • Flyovers at Dadi Sati Chowk and Ambedkar Chowk, and an underpass near Millennium City Centre Metro station, have been approved.
  • The total approved cost is ₹136.41 crore.
  • The approval came at a meeting of the high powered works purchase committee chaired by Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini in Chandigarh.
  • Each project has a stipulated construction period of 18 months from the date of allotment.

What has been approved

The Dadi Sati Chowk flyover will come up at the intersection of Sectors 85, 86, 89 and 90. It has been allocated ₹43.05 crore. According to GMDA, the six-lane flyover will have an overall length of about 840 metres. It will include a 7.5-metre-wide U-turn beneath it, service roads on both sides, two-metre-wide walkways, traffic signals, road markings and better streetlighting.

The Ambedkar Chowk flyover, at the intersection of Sectors 45, 46, 51 and 52 on Vikas Marg, has been allocated ₹36.36 crore. This four-lane flyover will be about 930 metres long and is expected to ease movement towards Park Hospital and Arihant Hospital. It will also have service roads, slip roads, two U-turns beneath the flyover, covered drains with footpaths on both sides, traffic signals and improved lighting.

The underpass near Millennium City Centre Metro station, at the intersection of Sectors 27, 29, 43 and 44, has been allocated ₹57 crore.

Details of the underpass

The underpass will have approach stretches of about 1,350 metres in total. Of this, 625 metres will be towards Iffco Chowk and 725 metres towards Ardee City. U-turns will be provided towards both locations, along with 9.5-metre-wide service roads and 2.5-metre-wide footpaths on both sides.

For pedestrians, a covered foot overbridge of about 300 metres will be built, with four lifts and escalators. The project will also have grid-connected solar panels and two rainwater harvesting systems, each with a capacity of 200,000 litres.

What it means for commuters

The three locations are busy junctions linking several sectors of Gurugram. The works are meant to help traffic move more smoothly and to improve facilities for people on foot. GMDA said in its statement that each project must be completed within 18 months of allotment.
