The Nagaland government will hold a security coordination meeting this week to deal with the problem of extortion, particularly in Dimapur, Deputy Chief Minister Yanthungo Patton said on October 2. He was speaking to reporters in Kohima, according to India Today NE.

Key points

  • A security coordination meeting on extortion, especially in Dimapur, will be held this week, the Deputy Chief Minister said.
  • Nagaland Police registered 1,400 cognisable offences in 2025, according to the Home Department's annual report.
  • The state recorded 158 cases under the NDPS Act, with seized drugs valued at over Rs 52.21 crore.
  • The government is still waiting for the report of the SIT probing alleged double salaries among government employees.

What the Deputy Chief Minister said

Patton spoke on the sidelines of the inauguration of the 10th Captain Late Kenguruse Memorial Football Tournament at Indira Gandhi Stadium in Kohima. "We are going to have a security coordination meeting this week, before the 10th," he said. He did not give further details about who will attend or what steps may be discussed.

Crime figures in the Home Department report

The Home Department's Annual Administrative Report 2025-26 gives a picture of law and order in the state. Nagaland Police registered 1,400 cognisable offences in 2025. Of these, 1,003 were under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and 397 were under Special and Local Laws (SLL).

The state recorded 14 murder cases and 54 cases under the Arms Act. Police also registered 100 cases against various Naga political factions and arrested 160 cadres from different factions. Security forces seized 50 arms, 1,432 rounds of ammunition and 85 magazines during the year.

Drug-related offences remained a concern. A total of 158 cases were registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The seized items included about 576 kg of ganja, 20 kg of opium, 13 kg of heroin/shanflower and 10 kg of brown sugar/heroin. Police also seized 1,04,470 units of synthetic drugs and 3,232.5 bottles of cough syrup. The estimated value of all seized substances was more than Rs 52.21 crore.

The report also said 18 persons were booked under the National Security Act (NSA). Another 18 accused were booked under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PITNDPS) Act in 2025.

SIT report on double salaries awaited

Patton was also asked about the Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up to examine allegations that more than 1,000 government employees were drawing double salaries, or salaries along with pensions. "We are awaiting the report of the SIT," he said. He did not share any details on how far the investigation has progressed.

Why it matters

Extortion affects traders, businesses and ordinary residents, and Dimapur is a major commercial centre in the state. The planned meeting shows that the government wants the agencies concerned to work together on the issue. Whether the meeting leads to specific action will become clear only after it is held.
