The Odisha government has lined up proposed investments of Rs 1.17 lakh crore across 11.7 gigawatts (GW) of energy projects. The plan follows around 18 memorandums of understanding (MoUs) exchanged at the Odisha Pavilion during the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo 2026 in New Delhi on Tuesday, according to BW Businessworld. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo were present at the signing ceremony.

Key points

  • About 18 MoUs were exchanged for proposed investments of Rs 1.17 lakh crore across 11.7 GW of projects.
  • The agreements involve developers, public sector undertakings, industrial partners and academic institutions.
  • Projects include pumped hydro storage, wind, solar, battery storage, green hydrogen, green ammonia and e-methanol.
  • The state government said the proposed investments exceed the targets set for its energy development programme.

What the agreements cover

The proposed projects cover a wide range of clean energy areas. These include pumped hydro storage, wind, solar, battery energy storage, distributed hydropower, green hydrogen, green ammonia, e-methanol and green data centres.

The partners include developers, PSUs, industrial firms and academic institutions. The state government said the total proposed investment is higher than the targets it had set for its energy development programme.

Pumped storage and hydropower

Odisha Hydro Power Corporation Limited (OHPC) and Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) exchanged an MoU for an 800 MW pumped storage project. The proposed investment is Rs 5,336 crore.

Other proposals include 1,540 MW of distributed hydropower capacity using turbine technology. The estimated investment for this is Rs 26,856 crore.

Green energy and storage

Another proposal covers green ammonia and e-methanol production. It is supported by an indicated 7.3 GW of solar capacity, with an estimated investment of Rs 25,700 crore.

The agreements also include a proposed green data centre with an initial information technology capacity of 2 MW. The investment for this project is Rs 100 crore.

The India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) also signed an agreement to support energy storage and green hydrogen development in Odisha. The support will come through knowledge exchange, local manufacturing, skills development and investment facilitation.

Why it matters

The proposed investments cover renewable power generation, energy storage and green industrial infrastructure. They show that Odisha is trying to expand its pipeline of clean energy projects. The figures are proposals made through MoUs, and the source does not say when the projects will begin or be completed.
