So what does a worker actually get?
The old law promised at least 100 days of wage work in each financial year.
The guarantee was for one adult member of every rural household who wanted unskilled manual work.
Wages were paid at the legal minimum rate set for the area. Workers were paid directly, without middlemen.
Women were guaranteed at least one third of the jobs, and efforts were made to keep their share above half.
What has changed in 2025?
In 2025 Parliament passed the Viksit Bharat–Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Act, called VB-G RAM G.
It repealed MGNREGA and replaced it with a new rural employment and livelihood framework under the Ministry of Rural Development.
Under the new Act, work is planned in advance through approved projects. Earlier, work was given on demand.
The funding is now shared between the Centre and the states, in a 60:40 pattern. Earlier it was almost fully central.

Critics say this weakens the right to work. The government says the new law is better planned. Check the latest rules on the official site.
Who can apply, and who cannot?
Any adult member of a rural household can ask for work, if they are willing to do unskilled manual labour.
Work is meant to be within 5 kilometres of your home.
Urban residents are not covered by this scheme. It is only for rural households.
The scheme is open to all castes, religions and genders. Women have a reserved share of the jobs.
What documents should you keep ready?
Keep a job card, or the application for one, issued by your gram panchayat.
Keep a passport size photo, and an Aadhaar card or other ID.
Keep a bank or post office account number, because wages are paid into it.
How do you apply, step by step?
Go to your gram panchayat office and ask for a job card application.
Fill in the family details, and give your photo and ID documents.
Once the job card is issued, apply for work in writing, stating how many days you want.
The panchayat must give you work within 15 days. If it does not, ask for the unemployment allowance in writing.
How do you check your job card or payment?
Visit nrega.nic.in and open the reports section to see your muster roll and payment status.
You can also ask the gram panchayat office or the block office for your records.
If your wage is late or missing, submit a written complaint to the panchayat and the block office.
What should you do if you are not given work?
First, apply for work in writing and keep a copy with a receipt.
If no work is given within 15 days, you can claim unemployment allowance from the panchayat.
You can raise your complaint with the Block Development Officer or the District Programme Coordinator.
Be careful of fraud
Work under this scheme is free. Never pay an agent to get a job card or work.
If anyone asks for money, report it to the gram panchayat and the district office.
