Key points
- The house is a pucca house, with a toilet and access to electricity and water.
- Your name must be in the verified Awaas Plus survey list of your village.
- Families with a pucca house, or with an income taxpayer or government employee, cannot apply.
- Money comes in instalments, so keep your bank account and Aadhaar linked.
So what exactly does a family get?
Eligible families get a central grant to build a pucca house. The exact amount is revised from time to time, so please confirm the current figure on pmayg.nic.in.
The money is paid in instalments, directly into the beneficiary's bank account.
The house is expected to be a pucca house with a toilet. The scheme also links families to electricity, LPG and drinking water schemes.
Families in hilly and difficult areas may get a higher grant and extra help.
Who can apply, and who cannot?
The main rule is simple. The family must be rural, poor, and without a pucca house.
Your name must be in the verified list of your gram panchayat, prepared through the Awaas Plus survey.
Families with a pucca house already cannot apply. Neither can families where an income taxpayer lives.
Government employees and families with a regular government job are also excluded. Pensioners with a higher monthly pension are out too.
Only one house is allowed per family, so anyone who owns a dwelling unit elsewhere in India is excluded.
Why is this scheme important?
PMAY-G began in 2016. It replaced the older Indira Awaas Yojana in rural areas.
It is run by the Ministry of Rural Development. The aim is a safe home for every poor rural family.
The scheme also works together with other schemes, like Saubhagya for electricity and Ujjwala for LPG.
What documents should you keep ready?
Keep your Aadhaar card, and a bank account linked with Aadhaar.
Keep your job card or any other proof of your family, and a mobile number.
Keep your land papers ready, because the house must be built on your own or allotted land.
How do you apply, step by step?
First, check the Awaas Plus survey list at your gram panchayat, or on pmayg.nic.in.
If your name is missing, ask the gram sabha or the panchayat secretary to add you in the survey.
After your name is on the list, the district and state verify it. Only then does the sanction come.
You can also visit the block office or a Common Service Centre for help with the forms.

What if the instalment does not come?
Check your status on pmayg.nic.in using your registration or Aadhaar details.
Most delays happen when the bank account is not linked with Aadhaar, or the construction stage is not updated.
You can raise a complaint on the portal, or contact the block office or the district rural development office.
Important tips to avoid fraud
Never pay anyone to get your name added to the list. Government help is free.
Be careful of agents who ask for money, or promise a house for a fee. Report them to the local officer.
