Key points

  • The card covers inhabited (abadi) land in villages, not farm land.
  • A clear property card can help you get a bank loan against your home.
  • Drones and GIS mapping are used to survey the village.
  • Only notified villages in participating states are covered.

So what exactly do you get?

Eligible households get a property card, also called a record of rights, for their home and the land it stands on.

The card shows your name as the owner of the property. It is a legal document for your inhabited land.

With a clear card, you can use the property as collateral to get a bank loan. It also helps reduce property disputes in the family and village.

The card is given free of cost. You should never pay an agent for it.

Who can apply, and who cannot?

The scheme works village by village. Your village must be notified under SVAMITVA, and the survey must be done or planned there.

The scheme covers inhabited residential land in rural areas. It does not cover agricultural land.

West Bengal, Bihar, Telangana, Meghalaya and Nagaland did not take part in the scheme. Tamil Nadu only ran a pilot project.

If your state is not participating, you cannot get a card under this scheme for now. Check with your Gram Panchayat.

Why was this scheme started?

SVAMITVA was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in April 2020. It is run by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj.

The aim is to create clear records of rights for homes in rural India. Unclear ownership makes it hard to borrow money.

The survey is done by the Survey of India using drones and GIS technology, with information from state governments after field verification.

The government has said all 344,868 notified villages will now be covered by March 2026, one year later than planned.

What documents should you keep ready?

Keep your Aadhaar card and a mobile number linked to it.

Keep any papers that prove your home or land, such as old house tax receipts, sale deed, or family records.

Keep the names of all members who live in the house, so the officials can verify the ownership details.

Your local officials may ask for other papers during verification, so keep copies ready.

How does the process work, step by step?

First, the drone survey of your village is done and maps are prepared.

Then, the state government verifies each property with the owner, in the field.

After verification, the property cards are prepared and given out to the families.

How can you check the status, and what if your card is delayed?

Start by asking your Gram Panchayat whether your village is notified under SVAMITVA.

Ask whether the field verification of your property is complete, and whether your card is ready.

If your card is delayed, raise the issue with the Gram Panchayat secretary or your block panchayat office.

Call the official helpline from the SVAMITVA website or your state panchayat office for updates.

What should you watch out for?

Never pay anyone for a property card. The scheme is free for eligible families.

Be careful of agents who promise a card for money. Report them to your Gram Panchayat or the police.

Make sure your name and the details on the card are correct before you accept it.

Keep the card safe, as it is an important legal record of your property.
