- Beware of fake sites and agents who charge a fee. Only the official portal is valid.
So what does a registered business actually get?
You receive an official Udyam Registration Certificate with a permanent Udyam Registration Number.
The certificate has a dynamic QR code that links to your enterprise details on the portal.
Registered MSMEs can get collateral-free loans under the CGTMSE scheme, and may get subsidies for ISO certification, electricity bills and patent filing.
Banks use the certificate to classify your business for priority sector lending, which can make loans easier to get.
The certificate does not guarantee a loan or a lower interest rate. Your credit history and repayment record still decide the terms.
Who can register, and what counts as an MSME?
Any enterprise that is a micro, small or medium business can register, whether it is manufacturing, service or both.
Classification is based on investment in plant and machinery or equipment, and on annual turnover.
From 1 April 2025, a micro enterprise has investment up to Rs 2.5 crore and turnover up to Rs 10 crore.
A small enterprise has investment up to Rs 25 crore and turnover up to Rs 100 crore. A medium enterprise has investment up to Rs 125 crore and turnover up to Rs 500 crore.
An enterprise should file only one Udyam Registration, though many activities can be added to that one registration.
Why did Udyam replace Udyog Aadhaar?
The scheme began in September 2015 as Udyog Aadhaar, a 12-digit number for small businesses.
In July 2020, the government replaced it with Udyam Registration to make the process online and reduce paperwork.
Businesses that had Udyog Aadhaar or Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum were asked to re-register or migrate to Udyam.
The government says over 7.8 crore enterprises had registered on the Udyam portal and Udyam Assist Platform by February 2026.
What documents do you need to keep ready?
You need the Aadhaar number of the proprietor, partner or director.
You also need the PAN of the business and, where applicable, the GST number.
Keep your basic business details ready, such as business name, address and bank account.
No documents need to be uploaded for a standard registration, since the details are verified from government records.

Can you register offline, and what if you have an old registration?
You can also get help at a Udyam Assist Platform centre, a District Industries Centre, or a government single window facilitation centre.
Those with an Udyog Aadhaar or UAM registration should migrate to Udyam on the same portal.
Only government portals and authorised facilitation centres may do this work. Private persons who charge a fee are not authorised.
What should you do if something goes wrong?
Check your certificate and details on the official portal before you rely on them for a loan.
If you face a problem, you can raise a complaint through the official portal's complaint option.
For delayed payments from buyers, the MSME Samadhaan portal helps with redressal.
Never pay an agent or a site that is not the official portal. Free registration means you should never be asked for money.
